Earth Dragons and Shape Shifters

Page history last edited by Kathy Shields 5 months ago

Welcome to EARTH SCIENCE, Grade 5

In this class, you will be learning about the constructive and destructive forces in nature. Our literature study on Earth Dragon Awakes, by Laurence Yep, will add a human dimension to these Earth processes by hearing from people who survived the San Francisco earthquake of 1906!

You will discover the cause and effect of geological changes using fun, interactive, and hands-on activities to experiment and apply your knowledge.  You will gain a better understanding of how these forces created Georgia landforms.  Your role, as student scientist makes you instrumental in contributing observations about the world around you. You will never look at the school ground the same way again!  You will explore your own theories, as you learn of earth’s constructive and destructive processes.

People are also responsible for landform changes. How can people cause changes and how can they repair damages from natural constructive and destructive forces? Think about the people who place their home on cliffs overlooking the ocean.  How might they be affected by  weathering and erosion? How might they prevent catastrophic consequences? What about tsunamis and earthquakes, can people prevent damage and avoid disaster?I

This unit will also provide support for students both in school as a self-paced learning center and at home offering extra help or additional opportunities for exploration and learning.

Do you already have some questions?  What do you notice about the picture on your right? Was is caused by and earthquake or a volcano? To find out, read more and get a better look at this intriquing landform found in New Mexico.
